2016 was the year of the digital Customs

Date 11/12/2015, WCO Secretary General, Kunio Mikuriya, published in 2016 will be the year to promote digitization of customs procedures with the slogan "Digital Customs: Development Assistance". WCO members will have the opportunity to introduce and further promote the use of information and communication (ICT).

The term "digital Customs" refers to any electronic activity, automation does contribute to increase efficiency, performance and the coordination of customs activities, such as self-clearance system dynamic, OSS, the electronic exchange of information, the website for connecting information, improving the transparency and use of smartphones.

Customs new era of digital has changed the way the activities of the customs authorities. Basically, it ensures the development - enhance the ability of the customs authorities in the communication, handling of goods, receive and exchange information and coordinate border activities, cooperation in the activities of law enforcement and promoting transparency.

Therefore, the development of technology capable of making a positive impact and change the customs operations through:

Improve compliance by all parties involved in international trade can enhance access to information and functionality as well as legal services.

Reduce customs clearance time for legitimate transactions;

Strengthen the coordination between the customs units, as well as between customs and border management agencies at the national and other international;

Increase transparency in the process of management and decision making;

The use of performance measures to improve customs procedures and enhance the integrity, such as through the technique was presented at the WCO Guidelines on the method of performance measurement (PMC) ;

Enhance detection of irregularities and illegal shipments through the collection and analysis of data.

Thus, digital Customs will contribute significantly to the realization of the objectives of the customs, including increased revenue, border security, statistical data collection and to facilitate the Commerce.

Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya said WCO now has a list of materials and tools to support Member States in the continuation of digital applications in customs operations.

He also called, in 2016, all members of the WCO please promote and share information on how to implement and apply digital technology to develop and implement objectives.

WCO's annual theme will be launched on International Customs Day 26.1, is organized annually by the Customs community globally to celebrate the opening session of the Customs Cooperation Council (CCC ) took place on 26/01/1953.
